”If you think that each piece of clothing and jewelry that you wear is a sentence, then a complete outfit would be a full statement. It would mean that around the railway station and on the stairs of the Music Centre there would be quite a performance and buzz created by people with their outfits.”
The idea comes from the artist Kirsti Tuokko. She tells that she investigates the culture of self-expression and manifestation. The many sophisticated and delicate ways in which people adapt themselves into a specific time and place with their clothing and accessories.
Tuokko observes the visual streams of colour on the urban streets, and the glossy imagery in high-end fashion magazines to gather material for her art. She transforms these observations into vivid images on large transparent plexiglass sheets in a manner that creates surprising and coincidential results.
Tuokko wants to retain the polished surface gloss of the plexiglass. That’s why the art must be painted on the backside of the plexiglass sheet. Only the first lines she draws give a hint of what the final piece of art will look like. Lines and layers intertwine so that the final result is visible only after the entire painting is erected. This way of working gives room for lucky coincidence, something the artist points out to be an important collaborator.
Tuokko uses oil, paint marker, spray paint. Does the artist belong to the graffiti generation? Hardly! Kirsti Tuokko embarked on her artist’s career only after finishing her 33 year career as a teacher of visual arts. This is her calling.
Kirsti Tuokko’s art exhibition ”Hat trick” is held at Bioforum in UPM’s new office building. It is open for everyone until the 19th of July. When strolling in the heart of the beautiful summer-city of Helsinki, come and visit the exhibition. I’m positive it will invigorate and renew both your mind and soul.
