UN World Environment Day: Choosing biodiversity

3 June 2016

World Environment Day (WED) is celebrated every year on June 5 to raise awareness on environmental issues and to inspire people to make a difference with their own choices. This year’s theme, Go Wild for Life, focuses on zero tolerance for illegal trade in wildlife products. Species such as elephants, rhinos, tigers, gorillas and sea turtles are fighting for their survival.

The fight for biodiversity is a fight we should all take part in. As 80% of the world’s known animal and plant species live in the forest UPM has a great responsibility in managing forests in a sustainable manner. Biodiversity has been a key element in UPM’s forestry and wood sourcing strategy for more than 20 years. UPM’s biodiversity programme aims to maintain and increase biodiversity in forests as well as promote best practices in sustainable forestry and wood sourcing.

Global Compact LEAD

The hard work for the environment has been noticed as UPM has, by invitation, joined a group of the 50 most sustainably advanced companies in the world in the UN Global Compact LEAD.

On this day we invite everyone to take action to protect biodiversity. Get informed and make a difference with your choices. Such as choosing certified paper and wood products.
