We work in forests year-round, sourcing wood and carrying out forest management activities. Almost all of the work related to these functions is performed by our key entrepreneurs. Using external service providers does not reduce our responsibility in ensuring the sustainability of these operations. Our goal is to carry out forestry in a viable manner with a long-term approach, enabling us to achieve a globally competitive forest industry. Responsibility is no longer a differentiating competitive factor in the end product market, but a basic feature expected by customers. This applies to everything from the sale of sawn pine timber to the production of harvesting services. Easy profits are not available by cutting corners.

Many of the key businesses carrying out harvesting, transport and forest management services have been working with us for decades and help us provide good services to forest owners and production facilities in a responsible manner. Profitable, competitive and responsible businesses are able to bear their financial, social and environmental responsibilities. Such businesses have a long-term approach to running their business and a capacity for developing their operations. Our key entrepreneurs are enthusiastic developers and willing to expand their service range as necessary.

As the contractor, we expect our partners to show uncompromising compliance with the Act on the Contractor’s Obligations and Liability when Work is Contracted Out, ecological sustainability, and financial and social responsibility. Values, concrete actions and long-term commitment form the basis for responsible business. These matters and the transparency of operations are part of the criteria we use to select partners, and our key entrepreneurs are committed to UPM values and our way of working.

Wood processing is a responsible business. Our main raw material is renewable Finnish wood that can be recycled several times during its life cycle. The supply chains of products and the origins of the raw materials used to produce them are fully traceable.

The majority of the wood we use comes from PEFC- or FSC-certified forests. These certificates have specific transparency requirements and tight criteria for all the operators involved in the supply chain.

Our uncompromising expertise in forestry and wood sourcing and the professional and responsible entrepreneurs we work with will help us ensure future forest growth, provide quality services to forest owners, and supply our mills with competitive raw material. New investments, innovation and the versatile use of Finnish raw material enable us to employ people in different parts of Finland and provide a good growth platform for our key partners. We have always relied on forests and will continue to do so in the future.
