Improving wastewater treatment plants

UPM Biofore

Sustainable use of water is one of UPM’s core environmental principles.

In 2013, UPM completed investments in wastewater treatment plants at UPM Nordland paper mill in Germany and UPM Pietarsaari pulp mill in Finland. In 2014, the optimisation continued at the effluent treatment plant of UPM Pietarsaari pulp mill. Additionally, as part of UPM’s Clean Run campaign a working group was established to support the optimization of operations at all company’s effluent treatment plants by sharing good operational practices and by being prepared to exceptional situations.

UPM is currently reviewing its water management and material efficiency at several mills. “Our primary aim is to run all our wastewater treatment plants so that we minimize the emissions and maximize the energy efficiency,” says Seija Vatka, Manager, Water, Environment and Responsibility, UPM. In China, UPM Changshu is currently investing in improving the nitrogen removal process of its waste water treatment plant. We are also co-operating locally to increase the use of recirculated nutrients in the waste water treatment plants. The effluent treatment plant refurbishments help us in achieving our long term environmental targets, and are in line with the company’s Biofore strategy”, Seija concludes.
