UPM Blandin is a sponsor of Treezy Does It, an online source for Minnesota K-12 teachers to go to for free, informative and interactive lessons about our forests, forest products and other topics of interest. Treezy Does It provides teachers with the State of Minnesota Academic Standards with connections to resource materials. UPM Blandin foresters are active with area elementary students and educators, creating real life experiences from the Treezy Does It curriculum. Students plant trees, take field trips into the forest to learn about the life cycle of the forest, identifying trees and plants and learning about animal habitats.
Blandin Forester, Dave Hensel, has been working with the Treezy Does It initiative for several years and recently helped create a new leaf identification booklet. “We are excited about the new leaf booklet for a couple of reasons. The teachers expressed a need for it, and the students love it,” said Hensel.
All students create a leaf collection and this leaf booklet will help guide them through the process.
Stop back often, because we’re always adding new lessons at TreezyDoesIt.com. There you will find lessons for your classroom smart board, and lessons in Spanish as well.
UPM Blandin foresters also attend the Minnesota Educator Academy (MEA) conference held annually in St. Paul, Minnesota. Teachers from all over the state participate in workshops, and an education trade show where they discover tools for use in their classrooms. UPM Blandin is a member of Minnesota Forest Industries that has a booth at MEA to distribute posters, papermaking kits, leaf ID booklets, and displays on TreezyDoesIt.com.
Treezy Does It initiative is part of UPM’s Biofore Share and Care programme. The programme focuses on projects that are relevant to both UPM’s business and responsibility goals. The focus areas are: Reading & Learning, Engaging with communities, Responsible water use and Boosting bioinnovations.
